thousand people in the late 19th century. Our great great uncle, Richard Chapman, lived here for several years with his young wife Jane. They had a baby here, Martha Jane. Jane died of heart failure near Amherst, so Eddie and I tried to find traces of the town on December 4 2008. There seemed to be nothing there but bush. See the following photos and imagine how hard life would have been for a young mother. We were nonplussed, since there seemed to be no town at all. Then we spied a young boy on a bike and asked whether he knew of a cemetery. Double click here to see our helper approaching. He sent us on a km or so to the Amherst cemetery, but alas we could not find Jane. We
tried, Susan and George, and will contact the supervisors of the cemetery to see whether Jane is in one of the unmarked, but numbered graves. Martha Jane and Richard are buried in Pontesbury, Shropshire. I thought Susan and George would enjoy our journey to Amherst.
